A total of 10,104 new undergraduate and applied undergraduate students of UGM carried out the Action Plan to implement UGM’s values in life and society. They directly addressed community issues for six days, from August 7 to 12, 2023.
“The Action Plan is conducted near the UGM campus as a platform for new students to contribute aspirations and creativity in community activities. Hopefully, this activity can provide a positive and sustainable impact on society,” stated the Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Sindung Tjahyadi, on Friday (August 18).
Dr. Tjahyadi explained that in the action plan, the students offered innovations manifested in various activities. Some include teaching at early childhood education centers and elementary schools, advising the general public, and community empowerment.
One such example is the work of UGM new students in Mrican, Sleman Regency, which focused on empowering women farmers. The women farmers’ group is one of the groups managed by the Mrican administration to sustain food security and hydroponic agriculture due to diminishing agricultural land.
Thus, this student team proposed empowering women farmers and improving character education for children through eco-friendly creations and innovations.
This initiative involved providing entrepreneurship skill training for the women farmers’ group, including organic farming techniques and diverse agricultural products, and organizing extracurricular activities and workshops for children.
“The role of Gamada (UGM new students) in the Action Plan deserves appreciation. Although they are still new to the campus’s surroundings, they can identify issues within the local community and provide ideas and innovations to promote sustainable living,” the director concluded.
