The Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conferred degrees to 991 graduates from the master’s, medical specialty, medical sub-specialty, and doctoral programs in the Graduation Ceremony for the Postgraduate Program for the Fourth Period of the Academic Year 2023/2024.
Among the 991 graduates, there were 834 master’s degree graduates (including ten international students), 80 specialty graduates, five sub-specialty graduates, and 72 doctoral graduates (including two international students).
The ceremony was attended by the Chair of the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama), Ganjar Pranowo, and the Governor of Central Kalimantan, Sugianto Sabran, who was present as his wife was one of the graduates.
Ganjar Pranowo delivered a speech at this event and pinned the Kagama pin on two graduates. He emphasized that Indonesia is currently facing a mental health crisis.
“Mental health is a crucial topic because raising awareness and concern about this issue will make Indonesia stronger, better, and healthier,” he stated at Grha Sabha Pramana, Bulaksumur, on Wednesday (Jul. 24).
He mentioned the increasing rate of suicide among young people recently is a significant issue. The university and the government have a critical role in addressing this problem by providing the necessary facilities and support.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia highlighted the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the coming decades. This technology can assist both the government and industry in decision-making processes.
However, she noted that AI technology poses risks, including intellectual property violations and data breaches. Many professions disappear in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, but new ones emerge.
A report by the McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2030, around 75 to 375 million jobs will be lost, leading to job losses and gains.
“Graduates should not rely on a single skill. Despite the growing need for specialized knowledge, possessing both technical and social skills and cross-disciplinary soft skills will make graduates more competitive and valuable,” said the rector.
