A group of MBKM Emergency and Disaster Health Management students at the UGM Nursing program organized training on first aid for people with disabilities.
The training was conducted for caregivers and disaster-resilient village volunteers in Donokerto Village on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
The group’s advisor, Dr. Syahirul Alim, stated that the training was held based on the consensus of the village assembly in conjunction with the Donokerto Village government.
They recognized the need to address disaster preparedness for people with disabilities. During disasters or emergencies, individuals with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups.
“In addition, the lack of knowledge about first aid for people with disabilities among caregivers and volunteers can be a hindrance during the evacuation,” he explained on Tuesday (September 5).
The training featured speakers from Yogyakarta Disaster Response for People with Disabilities (Difagana) and began with a pre-test for the participants.
This was done to assess the participants’ initial knowledge of the topics. After completing the pre-test, the program continued with presentations and practical exercises.
Hardi, the Secretary of Difagana, explained about Difagana, introduced the DIFGANDES 2.0 (Difagana Disaster Emergency Support) application, and covered first aid techniques and the ethics of interacting with people with disabilities.
The training lasted approximately two hours and concluded with a post-test and an evaluation.
This activity aligns with UGM’s commitment to supporting sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly in strengthening inclusive and peaceful communities for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.
