To improve the quality and competency of veterinary practitioners, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKH UGM) held a workshop on the use of anesthesia and analgesia machines.
Achieving optimal service in veterinary surgery requires skilled anesthesia professionals who can support veterinary surgeons in ensuring safe procedures without compromising animal welfare. The workshop took place on Friday (Jul. 4) at the Dean’s Meeting Room and the Dr. Soeparwi Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
The event was attended by 35 veterinarians from various regions, including Jakarta, South Kalimantan, and even Malaysia. Following this workshop, participants are expected to continue their education in veterinary anesthesia through professional associations or at their respective clinics.
“We aim to raise awareness among veterinarians in Indonesia of the importance of having specialized veterinary anesthetists to support surgical procedures,” said Dr. Dhirgo Adji, Head of the Surgery and Radiology Program at FKH UGM.
Dr. Adji noted that this activity is part of the faculty’s ongoing community service programs. This year, the focus was on enhancing human resources, particularly improving veterinarian competencies in anesthesiology and radiology.
“Community service doesn’t always mean going to rural areas; it can also take the form of professional training,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Dr. Widagdo Sri Nugroho, expressed hope that participants would apply and further develop their anesthesia expertise in their respective practices.
“We hope this knowledge will help strengthen the competence of Indonesian veterinarians so they are not left behind compared to their counterparts in other countries,” he stated.
The workshop featured two sessions: theoretical and hands-on practice. The first session introduced anesthesia machines used in surgical procedures, followed by a session on pain management and preventative measures, which then led into the practical training. The workshop concludes with a group-based practical session on the second day.
