To enhance the quality of news coverage, the Secretariat of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a technical photography workshop titled “Sharpening the Visual Narratives of Universitas Gadjah Mada.”
This event was held on Tuesday (Sep. 10) at the Persatuan Meeting Room, UGM Faculty of Philosophy. Public relations staff from various faculties and work units attended.
Professional photographer Wawan Hadi Prabowo, who served as the speaker, showcased some of his work from his career with several national media outlets. He captured moments from international events like the Sea Games, ASEAN Games, and Formula One, as well as humanitarian moments following disasters.
He emphasized the importance of PR practitioners sharpening and deepening their understanding of visual narratives.
“The visual aspect of a photo plays a crucial role in reinforcing the textual narrative we create,” said the former Kompas and LKBN Antara photographer.
Prabowo introduced the EDFAT method—Entire, Detail, Frame, Angle, and Time—a technique used to give photos a flow and make them feel like stories. He explained that each photo conveys meaning from the events and moments documented through photography.
“A photo holds a thousand meanings, so create a strong impression to ensure the reader’s interpretation aligns with the image,” Prabowo noted.
In addition to providing theoretical and technical insights, Prabowo also conducted a practical photo-taking session.
He encouraged all participants to capture indoor shots as examples for formal events. Participants were also asked to take outdoor photos to exercise creativity and photography taste. The images were then uploaded to Google Drive for evaluation and feedback from Prabowo.
This workshop, organized by the UGM Secretariat, aims to improve the photography skills of PR practitioners within UGM, ensuring that the visual content of news becomes even more high-quality.
