Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) inaugurated 125 functional officials, including 16 civil servants and 109 permanent UGM employees.
The inauguration, led by Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Finance Professor Supriyadi, took place both online and in person.
A total of 93 employees attended the ceremony virtually, while 32 representatives from various units participated in person.
The inauguration was conducted in accordance with Article 87 of Government Regulation No. 11 of 2017 on Civil Servant Management, which stipulates that all civil servants appointed to functional positions must be sworn in according to their religion or belief in God Almighty.
In his speech, Professor Supriyadi emphasized that holding a functional position signifies professionalism. A professional person is one who upholds integrity, whether as an employee, in academic contexts, or in performing their duties.
“Professionalism is a responsibility. It is crucial because if you violate this integrity, there will be consequences and the resulting impacts,” the vice-rector said at UGM’s Senate Hall on Thursday (Nov. 14).
By obtaining a functional or academic position, Professor Supriyadi stated that one has an obligation to continuously develop oneself, to keep learning and training, and to advance both scientific knowledge and practical skills.
Functional officials at UGM are expected to be at the forefront of advancing and promoting the university’s goals.
“These key principles—maintaining integrity and constantly striving for learning—are essential for enhancing professionalism,” he explained.
For example, Professor Supriyadi mentioned that an Expert Assistant position with a Master’s degree is encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree abroad within two to three years. This is not to undermine local education but rather to provide opportunities for international exposure.
Professor Supriyadi added that studying abroad offers broader exposure to different institutions, fields of study, and disciplines developed in other countries.
“This will undoubtedly enrich us, enabling us to become professionals who can contribute more to the university, society, and the nation,” he concluded.
