The UGM Public Relations and Protocol organized sign language training for non-teaching staff from all faculties and units within the university on Monday (26/6) at UGM Central Building.
The training, in collaboration with the Indonesian Sign Language Center (Pusbisindo), aims to enhance the quality of inclusive public services at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
“UGM, philosophically, strategically, and practically, strives to develop and continuously improve the facilities and role of UGM as an inclusive campus. Today, we will be introduced to sign language, and there will be more in-depth training in the future,” said the Acting Head of UGM Public Relations and Protocol, Dr. Dina W. Kariodimedjo.
Developing inclusive services for all, including people with disabilities, aligns with UGM’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 Quality Education and SDG 16 Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
SDG 4 ensures inclusive and equitable education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. SDG 16 aims to promote inclusive and peaceful societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, inclusive institutions at all levels.
“UGM has students, lecturers, and employees with disabilities; all those present here are the front liners who will provide services to people in need. Hopefully, our efforts can truly benefit our friends with disabilities and contribute to the improvement of inclusive services at UGM that we need to support together,” Dr. Kariodimedjo said.
Following this initial meeting, more intensive training consisting of eleven sessions is planned to deepen understanding and mastery of sign language.
“We hope this training can continue and be sustainable and can support UGM’s aspiration to become an inclusive campus,” said Shafa, one of the participants from the Faculty of Agriculture.
In addition to the non-teaching staff, several students participated in this activity, including Angga from the UGM Student Executive Board (BEM KM).
“Thank you to the UGM Public Relations and Protocol for organizing this training. Through this training, as a student, I understand that we also need to prepare an inclusive campus for people with disabilities,” he concluded.
