In an effort to foster a healthy, inclusive, and just social environment, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has launched two key initiatives: the Healthy Relationship Handbook and the UGM AI English language platform (UGM AI). These initiatives were officially launched at UGM’s Innovation and Creativity Hub (GIK UGM) on Thursday (Jul. 17).
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia stated that the publication of the Healthy Relationship Handbook represents the realization of a shared vision, developed through a collective awareness of the importance of cultivating healthy social relationships on campus.
“At UGM, our students, staff, and lecturers come from diverse social, cultural, economic, and personal backgrounds. Without a common guide, unhealthy relationships can emerge. We hope this handbook serves as a reference for building more harmonious, just, and inclusive relationships across campus,” she said.
In addition to the handbook, Professor Emilia also introduced UGM AI, an artificial intelligence-based English learning platform designed to enhance foreign language literacy among students.
“We want UGM graduates to be able to communicate actively in English and possess the language skills that will boost their competitiveness in the job market,” the rector added.
Professor Wening Udasmoro, UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching and lead coordinator of the handbook’s development, emphasized that the Healthy Relationship Handbook is UGM’s first formal reference guide for building safe and violence-free relationships.
“This handbook was developed collaboratively. It not only presents theoretical concepts but also includes relevant examples and engaging illustrations to make it easier for readers to understand and apply,” she explained.
In her report, Professor Udasmoro also shared that the handbook took several months to complete, involving a dedicated team that brought together a range of perspectives and expertise.
“We created this handbook as a vital part of raising awareness about inclusive social relationships within campus life. It calls on us to respect one another regardless of age, position, or background,” she added.
Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan, Head of UGM’s Digital Transformation Bureau, explained that UGM AI features a variety of learning modules developed by a team from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM).
These modules are available through UGM Online and begin with a screening test to assess students’ initial English proficiency.
“On this platform, students can study the materials, complete exercises, and take the placement test. They will then receive personalized results and access additional learning resources,” he explained.
Designed as an equitable and constructive learning tool, UGM AI enables all students, regardless of their initial language proficiency, to improve their skills in a structured and inclusive manner.
In the future, the platform is expected to be replicated for other foreign languages and expanded into an AI-based Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), allowing students to learn languages independently and flexibly.
The launch of the Healthy Relationship Handbook and UGM AI platform reflects UGM’s commitment to fostering a just academic environment and building an inclusive learning ecosystem.
These initiatives not only support academic excellence but also uphold the university’s core humanistic values. They are expected to serve as a strong foundation for creating a healthier, more inclusive, and just campus environment, while enhancing global competencies.
