The global higher education ranking institution, QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), has released the 2024 QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject, which sees Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) securing the 263rd position globally, ranking 178th globally in the Social Sciences and Management field, 272nd in Art and Humanities, 316th in Engineering and Technology, and 451-500 in Life Science and Medicine.
Additionally, UGM has placed 25 fields of study in QS by Subjects for 2024, an increase from the previous year. Two fields at UGM newly included in QS by Subjects this year are History and Physics & Astronomy.
Apart from ranking universities overall, QS also publishes rankings for specific fields of study. This year, QS has published rankings for 55 subjects within five broad subject areas, an increase from the 54 subjects in the previous year.
UGM’s Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, stated that the success of UGM’s 25 fields of study in being ranked globally is a momentum that further enhances the performance of these fields and others to achieve better rankings.
“I believe various efforts have been made to enhance reputation through improved collaboration in industry, academia, and research fields,” said the rector on Friday (April 12).
The inclusion of numerous fields in this ranking, apart from academic aspects, impact, and citation counts, is also attributed to the efforts of faculty, departments, and study programs to improve the quality of graduates through a series of learning processes.
“This continuous improvement process can elevate the quality and reputation of UGM graduates, nationally and internationally,” she mentioned.
The rector hopes that more fields will be included in QS by Subjects in the coming years and that the performance of existing ranked fields will improve to achieve better positions.
“I hope that in the future, the number of fields evaluated in rankings will increase, which presents both a challenge and motivation for us,” she said.
Of the 25 fields included in this ranking, Anthropology and Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies are ranked 51-100 globally.
UGM’s Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, expressed joy and gratitude because the Interreligious Studies field consistently ranks within the top 100 globally, even reaching the 47th position in the past.
“This reinforces UGM as a university that consistently supports tolerance and diversity,” he emphasized.
Apart from Anthropology and Interreligious Studies, Development Studies and Social Policy and Administration are ranked 101-130 globally, while Geography ranks 101-150 globally.
In the 151-200 range, there are fields like Archeology, Modern Languages, Accounting and Finance, Politics and International Studies, and Agriculture and Forestry.
Other fields such as History rank 201-230, Economics and Econometrics, Business and Management Studies, Sociology, and Law rank 201-250.
