The press plays a crucial role in society and democracy. Throughout its history, the press has evolved and experienced different policies under various governments.
Over two decades into the reform era, the main challenge is not only press freedom but also their independence.
Dr. Hendry Julian Noor, a lecturer in Public Administrative Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada, revealed that lately, some media outlets in Indonesia have been co-opted by certain interests.
This raises questions about the press’s function and its alignment with the public interest.
“The press acts as an informal watchdog over the government’s performance. Imagine how dangerous it would be if the interests of financial backers co-opted all press,” Dr. Noor stated during a discussion on press freedom sent to journalists on Monday, Mar. 3, 2025.
According to Dr. Noor, the press is a form of freedom of speech, a fundamental human right protected by law.
Press freedom is not only positioned as the voice of the people but also as a key pillar of a nation’s democracy.
However, reflecting on the challenges facing the press under the Prabowo-Gibran administration, he advised against high expectations.
The government’s attitude, as portrayed in the current media, appears to be one of resistance toward the press.
Several instances of public criticism have not been well-received by the government, even though it should understand that freedom of speech exists and that criticism is a part of that right.
“Public criticism and input should be heard and considered, not met with unresponsive statements,” he added.
Dr. Noor pointed out the recent social media trend #KaburAjaDulu, which was labeled as unpatriotic by some.
In reality, it reflects public dissatisfaction with government performance, not a lack of love for the country.
“I haven’t seen the government being outright anti-criticism since no actions have been taken against those expressing opinions. However, indeed, their responses to criticism are often inappropriate,” Dr. Noor stated.
For him, press freedom is essential for the public as a check and balance on the government.
In a democratic system, public sovereignty should take precedence over other interests.
Hopefully, the press will continue to grow stronger, not through co-optation or serving specific interests, but by fully standing for the public good.
