The Medicine program at the UGM Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM) has successfully entered the world ranking at 359 according to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) by Subject for the year 2024.
Dr. Lina Choridah, MD, the Vice Dean for Research and Development of FK-KMK UGM, stated that the faculty is proud of this achievement. However, she also sees this achievement as a challenge to continuously strive for improvement in FK-KMK UGM’s national and international ranking.
“This success can be a source of pride, but also a challenge for us at FK-KMK UGM to enhance our quality and reputation even further,” said Dr. Choridah to reporters on Thursday (May 2).
According to Dr. Choridah, the success in entering the world ranking is attributed to the outstanding tri-dharma activities that optimize data and information technology integrated within the Academic Health System to improve the health status of individuals, families, and communities.
Dr. Choridah said FK-KMK UGM already has a Strategic Policy for 2023-2027, which includes internationalization and benchmarking with leading institutions worldwide, primarily to support technology-based medical and health programs that are transdisciplinary and translational.
“To support this, FK-KMK UGM has become a research institution that supports the creation of high-quality publications, providing a positive impact on the advancement of science and the welfare of society,” she added.
The QS WUR uses five indicators to assess the ranking of study fields related to academic reputation, graduate reputation, citations per scholarly journal, productivity index, publication impact, and international publication collaboration. Regarding academics, FK-KMK UGM has various supporting programs, such as innovation in guest lectures.
“In the past, guest lecture activities only involved external speakers. However, now we have made a breakthrough by collaborating with universities or institutions where the speakers come from,” she explained.
FK-KMK UGM also conducts continuous curriculum improvements as an acceleration step in achieving student competencies. These efforts include identifying educational program needs, determining learning outcomes, curriculum content agreed upon by the design team, curriculum evaluation, education strategy determination, teaching methods, research methods, communication to all stakeholders, creating an appropriate learning environment, and involving strict quality assurance.
Dr. Choridah mentioned that various research facility developments and shared facility optimization have been implemented at FK-KMK UGM to promote research publications.
“Research grants have been prioritized in our budget, and we also provide additional support such as proofreading and grammar check services,” she elaborated.
In strengthening graduate reputation, Dr. Choridah explained that FK-KMK UGM continues to enhance the academic environment to ensure quality graduates and encourage scholarly development. About 8% of the FK-KMK UGM’s academic community has reached the full professor level.
“Out of 645 academic members, around 47.1% have obtained a doctoral degree, while 20.5% have served as SP2 or consultants,” she said.
Furthermore, FK-KMK UGM students also receive other beneficial development activities, such as annual scientific meetings inviting alums from various professional fields such as research, teaching, and industry. This aligns with the policy to enhance the role of alums and other strategic partners in the tri-dharma of higher education.
“In the medical field, fellow graduates are considered siblings and included in the doctor’s oath,” she concluded.
