Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is in deep mourning following the passing of one of its esteemed professors, Professor Hadi Sabari Yunus, a senior lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Geography (Geography UGM), on Wednesday (Jun. 5) at 11:49 AM at the age of 78.
Dozens of UGM’s academic community members accompanied and bid farewell to the late professor at his final resting place at the UGM Cemetery in Sawitsari.
University officials, lecturers, non-teaching staff, and students expressed deep condolences to the family during the ceremony held at Balairung UGM on Thursday (Jun. 6).
“On Wednesday, Jun. 5, 2024, at 11:49 AM, the entire UGM community mourns the loss of our colleague, teacher, and one of UGM and Indonesia’s finest sons, Professor Hadi Sabari Yunus,” stated Professor Mochammad Maksum, during the funeral ceremony on Thursday (Jun. 6).
On behalf of the UGM community, Professor Maksum expressed profound condolences to Professor Yunus’s family. He also called on everyone to pray for God Almighty to grant the deceased the highest place and give the family the strength and patience to continue the late professor’s legacy.
Professor Yunus was a senior lecturer in settlement geography, urban planning, and regional development at Geography UGM.
He was appointed a professor at Geography UGM on Mar. 1, 2004. His inaugural lecture, “Sustainable Urban Development: Issues and Strategies for Achievement,” outlined fundamental ideas to guide the achievement of sustainable cities.
“With that speech, Professor Yunus conveyed a glimmer of hope, wishing that the slogan ‘sustainability as the principle and good governance as the practice’ would become a reality in the future,” said Professor Maksum.
If echoed by future generations, this slogan will remind them of the wisdom of their ancestors in planning regional development and urban growth. The ultimate goal is to achieve sustainability in all areas and create sustainable cities across Indonesia.
“In closing, let us accompany the late Professor Yunus to his final resting place, praying that God Almighty forgives his sins, multiplies his good deeds, and grants him peace and the highest place in His presence,” concluded Professor Maksum.
