Professor Suryo Guritno passed away on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. This mathematics and statistics expert from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM bid farewell at 76.
Before his interment at the UGM Sawitsari cemetery, the late professor’s body was honored at the UGM Balairung, where members of the UGM community paid their final respects.
Born in Yogyakarta on Jun. 8, 1947, Professor Guritno dedicated his life to mathematics, specializing in statistics.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UGM in 1972. Later, he earned a master’s degree from the University of New South Wales in 1981 and a doctorate from The University of Connecticut in 1987.
Throughout his tenure at UGM, he held various key positions, including Secretary of the Mathematics Department at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (1987-1979), Assistant Dean I of the same faculty (1988-1991), Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (1991-1997), Head of the Statistics Laboratory (2003-2006), and Chair of the UGM Professor Council (2007-2010).
Professor Mochammad Maksum, Chair of the UGM Professor Council, conveyed profound condolences on behalf of the UGM community for the loss of Professor Suryo Guritno.
He described the late professor as a stalwart in the field of mathematics, with a specialization in statistics. Professor Suryo Guritno’s inaugural professorship speech, titled “Mathematics in Statistics: Roles and Challenges,” delivered on Feb. 21, 1998, remains a testament to his dedication.
“He held firm to the belief that ‘There is no statistic without error,’ driving him to delve tirelessly into profound statistical research,” Professor Maksum remarked.
Professor Suryo Guritno received recognition for his contributions, including recognition from the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Connecticut Chapter, USA.
“The legacy of his scholarly pursuits at UGM will forever endure. We thank the late Professor Guritno for his mentorship and exemplary leadership within the UGM community. May his wisdom and contributions pave the way for future scientific endeavors,” Professor Maksum concluded.
