Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) expresses its deepest condolences over the passing of two students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) in Southeast Maluku.
One of the victims, Bagus Adi Prayogo, an undergraduate student from the Faculty of Forestry, was found dead on Tuesday, Jul. 1, 2025, at 23:00 Eastern Indonesian Time after being reported missing in a marine accident in the waters of Debut, Southeast Maluku.
The incident occurred during the Coral Reef Revitalization activity, which is part of the KKN-PPM Unit Manyeuw program.
A group of seven UGM students and five local residents used two motorboats to collect sand for the construction of an Artificial Patch Reef (APR).
On their return trip, one of the boats capsized due to high waves and strong winds.
Five students were successfully rescued, one student was confirmed deceased at the scene, and Bagus was initially reported missing before his body was later recovered by local residents.
Dr. Rustamadji, Director of Community Service at UGM, conveyed heartfelt condolences and deep appreciation for the dedication shown by the late student in carrying out his service duties.
“We are deeply saddened. Bagus was an active student who cared deeply for the environment and demonstrated a high level of commitment in every service activity. May he be granted the best place by the side of the Almighty, and may his family be given strength and fortitude,” he expressed.
The late student was known as an intelligent, humble individual with a strong spirit of collaboration. In addition to his academic achievements, he was also active in various social and student activities.
UGM, through its Directorate of Community Service and the relevant faculty, is currently coordinating intensively with the Southeast Maluku Regency Government, the Maluku Provincial Government, the Manyeuw Field Supervising Lecturer, and the Kagama Maluku.
The primary focus is on emergency response, psychological support for other students, and the repatriation of the body to his hometown.
“We sincerely appreciate all parties who contributed to the search and evacuation process, including local government, local partners, and community members. Their support means a great deal during this difficult time,” Dr. Rustamadji added.
UGM remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all KKN-PPM participants and is conducting a thorough evaluation of its field safety protocols.
