UGM has opened the independent admission route for new students. Through #UGMUpdate, UGM unveils that 11 faculties and 24 study programs will offer the International Undergraduate Program (IUP).
Prospective students can embark on three waves, spanning from January to March, April to June, and June to July.
“For all study program quotas, the tally is approximately 965, each with its quota variations. Some boast 25, 30, or 60 spots, varied yet essentially aimed at providing extensive opportunities for admission into the program,” elaborated Dr. Sigit Priyanta, serving as the Secretary of the UGM Directorate of Education and Teaching.
The fluctuations in quotas across programs align with each faculty’s capability to deliver internationally oriented classes.
The prerequisites for IUP candidates closely mirror other pathways. However, aspirants must demonstrate solid English proficiency given the program’s English language instruction.
This proficiency will be tested via diverse testing formats, spanning interviews, academic potential tests, and focus group discussions during the selection process. Each faculty tailors its test formats to suit prospective students’ needs and compatibility with the intended study program.
The Faculty of Animal Sciences is among the faculties embracing the IUP. Since 2021, the faculty has nurtured students’ passions and talents through this program. Dr. Tri Satya Mastuti Widi of the Faculty of Animal Sciences noted a significant student interest in the livestock business sector.
This inclination surfaced through registrations for the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, where numerous Animal Science students gravitated towards entrepreneurship-related courses. Preceding the advent of IUP, students favored cross-country internship locales.
“We’ve noticed a surge in students opting for internships abroad, be it in Japan, Vietnam, Korea, or Thailand. Many return to these destinations post-graduation, having been absorbed into familiar companies as staff. Others embark on entrepreneurial ventures, both at home and overseas. It’s an appealing prospect,” shared Dr. Widi.
The UGM Faculty of Engineering is relatively new to the IUP scene. Nevertheless, almost all study programs at the faculty boast international accreditation. Last year, it introduced the IUP across 3 out of 8 study programs. This year, the tally climbs with an additional 5 study programs.
“The curriculum remains consistent with the regular program to uphold the quality. However, these IUP students benefit from exposure to internationally rooted activities,” explained Professor Bertha Maya Shopa.
The IUP initiative extends beyond offering educational pathways to prospective students. It’s a conduit for enhanced learning under international standards, with opportunities to spend a semester abroad across various countries.
Thus, students not only master their chosen study programs but also cultivate proficiency in navigating cultural diversity, learning, and development on a global scale.
