Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has once again lost one of its most esteemed members. Professor Djoko Soetrisno, Professor Emeritus of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet UGM), passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025.
A final tribute was held on the same day at Balairung, attended by university leadership, faculty members, and colleagues.
“May the late Professor be granted ease on his journey to Allah SWT. On behalf of the family, we sincerely apologize for any mistakes or shortcomings he may have made,” said Professor Bambang Suhartanto, speaking on behalf of the family.
Professor Soetrisno passed away at the age of 77 years and 11 months and was laid to rest at the UGM Cemetery in Sawitsari. He is survived by three daughters and one son, all of whom have established successful careers in their respective fields. Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, Professor Budi Guntoro, conveyed the faculty’s most profound condolences. He noted that Professor Soetrisno had served the university for four decades, first as a lecturer, then as an academic staff member, and finally as a professor.
“His contributions and work in the Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed continue to inspire and educate to this day. We extend our highest appreciation and deepest respect for Professor Soetrisno’s service. May it be recorded as part of his good deeds and devotion,” said Professor Guntoro.
Born in Yogyakarta on May 28, 1947, Professor Soetrisno earned his undergraduate degree from Fapet UGM before pursuing a master’s degree in the Philippines and a doctoral degree in Malaysia. His academic career began in 1974 as a lecturer, progressing through the ranks to become an assistant expert, junior lecturer, and eventually a professor, officially inaugurated on September 21, 2002.
In his inaugural speech, titled The Potential of Forage Crops for the Development of Ruminant Livestock, he emphasized the importance of science and interdisciplinary approaches in advancing the national livestock sector.
“He stated that the success of the livestock industry in our country, particularly in the ruminant sector, depends in part on the development of forage crops for feed supply,” said Chair of the UGM Council of Professors, Professor Muhammad Baiquni.
According to Professor Baiquni, Professor Soetrisno’s inaugural speech was a significant academic contribution that sparked further discussion on feed innovation. These insights have proven valuable for farmers in managing nutritious animal feed and increasing livestock productivity.

Even after his retirement, his teachings continued to support numerous research initiatives. His legacy endures as a remarkable contribution to education and agricultural science.
