Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a promotional event on Thursday (Nov. 7) at the University of Yangon (UY), Myanmar, for its international degree programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The visit was led by UGM Vice-Rector for Education and Learning, Professor Wening Udasmoro, Secretary of the Directorate of Education and Learning, Dr. Sigit Priyanta, and faculty representatives, including Vice-Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Biology, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji.
The visit began with a courtesy meeting with the rector and university leadership, during which they discussed plans for developing collaboration in art and science.
The occasion also featured an information session on UGM’s international postgraduate programs for UY’s final-year students and staff.
“Myanmar marks UGM’s initial step in offering opportunities for students from the Southeast Asia region with various scholarship schemes available. In the near future, UGM will also visit Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam next year,” said Professor Udasmoro.
The enthusiasm for the event continued into the second day, Friday (Nov. 8), when it was held in a hybrid format and divided into two sessions.
The morning session invited school principals, parents, and high school students for a presentation on the International Undergraduate Programs (IUPs).
Higher education leaders, staff, and students attended the afternoon session to learn about postgraduate programs. Scholarships were the most frequently asked topic, along with questions regarding campus facilities, the registration system, tuition fees, and other aspects.
The day-long event concluded with an alumni gathering, where 18 of the 52 UGM alumni in Myanmar attended.
“This event serves as a platform to keep alumni connected with their alma mater and to enhance the role of alumni in supporting the university’s reputation,” said Professor Udasmoro.
UGM’s visit to Myanmar received full support from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Yangon. The Charge d’Affaires Ad Interim of KBRI Yangon, M. Arif Hidayatullah, along with the Education, Social, and Cultural Attaché, Harlianto, welcomed UGM’s delegation in promoting the programs.
“UGM’s visit not only strengthens UGM-Myanmar collaboration in the field of tri-dharma but also serves as a good practice model for other institutions,” said Hidayatullah.
