Universitas Gadjah Mada, through the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence, has provided workshops and training on the prevention and handling of sexual violence cases for high school students and university students.
This activity is organized as a manifestation of UGM’s commitment to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in achieving quality education and gender equality.
Through these workshops and training sessions, it is hoped that understanding of sexual violence prevention and handling will be improved among students, ultimately preventing sexual violence incidents in the educational environment.
Training on the Handling of Sexual Violence on Campus
The UGM task force collaborated with the Hasanuddin University task force to provide intensive training on handling sexual violence cases in the campus environment on September 21-22, 2023.
The training, which took place in Makassar, was attended by 21 people, including members of the Hasanuddin University task force, psychologists from the Hasanuddin University Psychology Service Center, and foundation representatives.
During this training, the UGM task force shared best practices for preventing and handling sexual violence cases implemented within UGM.
The UGM task force chair, Dr. Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, and other members of the academic community from UGM presented materials covering the importance of sexual violence prevention and handling, the synergies between faculties and the university, the various forms of sexual violence, case handling mechanisms, assessment, the compilation of chronologies, documentation, and recording of reports, examination of the accused, witnesses, and case evidence, sanctions, and reflection.
The training also included a presentation by clinical psychologist Iyan Afriyani Hasbullah, who discussed the psychological conditions and impacts on victims of sexual violence and experiences in assisting victims of sexual violence.
Dr. Sri Wiyanti Eddyono emphasized that UGM’s collaboration and involvement in providing this training align with UGM’s commitment to gender equality, especially in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She hopes this training can provide new knowledge and insights to the participants.
“Hopefully, this training will strengthen the Hasanuddin University task force in fulfilling its mandate, as stipulated in Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 30 of 2021, to prevent and handle sexual violence in higher education,” Dr. Eddyono added.
Professor Farida Patittingi of Hasanuddin University said that nearly a year after its inauguration, the Hasanuddin University task force has developed standard operating procedures and instruments needed to fulfill its duties and responsibilities and handle cases.
However, there have been some challenges in handling cases, which require the task force to promote its duties and responsibilities more effectively to the campus community.
“This training is one of the efforts made by the Hasanuddin University task force to support and strengthen their role in handling cases of sexual violence,” Professor Patittingi explained.
Workshop for High School Students in Yogyakarta
In addition to providing training on sexual violence prevention, the UGM task force has also organized a sexual violence prevention workshop for high school students.
The workshop, which took place on October 17, 2023, at SMK Budi Mulia Dua Yogyakarta, was attended by 40 students and ten teachers.
During the workshop, Professor Raden Ajeng Yayi Suryo Prabandari and Istiqomah Yungsiana, both members of the UGM task force, provided explanations about sexual violence, its various forms, individual and group-based prevention of sexual violence, case handling mechanisms, stages of case handling, and case assessment.
The workshop also covered efforts to prevent recurring incidents of sexual violence in educational environments.
Professor Prabandari explained that this event aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly regarding achieving quality education and gender equality.
The goal is to provide literacy and raise awareness about sexual violence in the realm of secondary education. The workshop also aims to build synergy between universities and high schools to prevent sexual violence from occurring in educational settings at all levels.
