In the 2024 Instagram University Ranking unveiled by UniRank recently, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) claimed a spot among the top three most influential universities globally, standing shoulder to shoulder with Harvard University in first place and the University of Oxford in second.
With an impressive follower count of 1,305,015 at the time of evaluation, UGM stands tall as the sole Indonesian university in the top five, maintaining its status as the most sought-after university in Indonesia. As of the time of this report, UGM’s Instagram followers have surged to 1,315,670.
“Two years ago, we were honored to be among the top ten globally, but this year, we’ve ascended to the third position,” remarked the University Secretary, Dr. Andi Sandi Antonius Tabusassa Tonralipu, on Monday (Feb. 26).
“This accomplishment is the fruit of relentless dedication from UGM’s social media management team, supported by various stakeholders, consistently delivering impactful and engaging content for the public.”
Dr. Tonralipu elaborated that navigating social media management is rife with challenges. Besides keeping pace with platform evolutions and ever-shifting trends, vigilant monitoring of UGM-related issues is imperative and requires unwavering commitment.
Additionally, catering to the diverse demographics of the target audience on each social media platform presents unique content planning and production hurdles.
“Crafting substantive content into visually appealing and easily consumable formats for our audience is no mean feat. There’s always room for enhancement, and we’re firmly dedicated to forging ahead,” the university secretary emphasized.
Beyond Instagram, UGM also holds the mantle of the most popular university in Indonesia on the TikTok platform, as indicated by RevoU’s 2023 findings. Furthermore, UGM is the pioneering university account on both platforms to receive verification, denoted by the coveted blue checkmark.
In tandem with bolstering UGM’s primary social media accounts, endeavors to fortify faculties’ and other units’ social media accounts are underway. One of the strategic initiatives is activating public relations forums as a conduit for social media managers to glean insights from experts and exchange knowledge.
Dr. Tonralipu envisions these social media platforms will serve as conduits to showcase UGM’s eminence, contributions, and promotional endeavors in upholding the tri-dharma of higher education (education, research, and community service).
“Social media emerges as an extraordinarily potent platform for disseminating information and fostering community rapport. We are grateful for the support and engagement from UGM’s community and beyond. Hopefully, this achievement will fuel our drive and enthusiasm to persist in our developmental pursuits,” Dr. Tonralipu concluded.
