The Pancasila Sports Hall (Gelanggang Olahraga/GOR) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has been officially renamed GOR Nusantara, located on the eastern side of UGM. The inauguration of the new name for this campus facility, managed by the Directorate of Student Affairs, was held on Friday (Jan. 9). Symbolically, the renaming ceremony was marked by a tumpeng-cutting ritual, a joint prayer, and a ribbon-cutting procession.
UGM Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito, stated that the name GOR Nusantara was chosen to reflect the values and spirit of unity, as the sports hall serves as a facility for UGM students who come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and regions across Indonesia.
“The renaming to GOR Nusantara reflects the character that sports activities are national activities that can foster an optimistic character among students, accompanied by values of non-violence, diversity, and justice,” he said.
He expressed hope that GOR Nusantara would continue to produce outstanding students in accordance with their respective interests and talents.
To date, the sports hall has hosted various activities, including the Porsenigama agenda, regular training sessions for student activity units, and open competitions, all of which have contributed to numerous achievements.

Furthermore, Dr. Sujito emphasized that sports activities can cultivate students’ abilities, mentality, and sense of fairness. The university’s support for activities at GOR Nusantara aims to shape students’ character in harmony with the Indonesian nation’s character.
“The provision of sports facilities within the campus environment is highly valuable for the entire academic community, as it trains competitiveness and sportsmanship, while also serving as a means to support well-being and enhance the teaching and learning process,” he explained.

At the end of his remarks, Dr. Sujito expressed his hope that the inauguration of the new name GOR Nusantara would lead to the emergence of more athletes from Universitas Gadjah Mada who excel in achievement, character, and culturally grounded knowledge.
Therefore, the academic community is encouraged to instill a perspective that views sports as a collective endeavor aimed at educating future generations.
“GOR Nusantara is intended to instill sportsmanship so that it can serve as a role model for generations to come,” he said.
The inauguration agenda continued with the tumpeng-cutting ceremony, led by Dr. Arie Sujito, with Dr. Hempri Suyatna, Director of Student Affairs, in attendance.
Following a solemn joint prayer, the event proceeded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Secretary of the Directorate of Assets, Edi Prasetyo, and the Head of UGM’s Occupational Safety, Emergency, and Environmental Security Office (K5L), Sugiyanta.
