The UGM Directorate of Community Service (DPkM), through the Disaster Response Unit (DERU), sent a team to distribute aid to residents affected by floods in Demak Regency, Central Java, on March 19–20, 2024.
DPkM collaborated with KAGAMA Central Java to deliver groceries and food to affected residents. The assistance provided is expected to meet residents’ needs during Ramadan.
KAGAMA Central Java, led by Haerudin, the Secretary of KAGAMA Central Java, and representatives from DPkM, delivered aid to the location where displaced residents are located at Wisma Halim. A total of 60 packages of groceries were given to residents, demonstrating UGM’s concern for those affected by the flood.
Agus Riyanto, Director of Emergency Empowerment Support at BNPB, Akhmad Sugiharto, Regional Secretary of Demak Regency, and M. Agus Nugroho LP, Head of the BPBD Demak, welcomed DPkM and KAGAMA Central Java’s concern for the flood disaster that occurred in Demak and its surrounding areas.
The aid distribution agendas continued with joint coordination to discuss various alternative solutions for handling the region’s unfavorable conditions. One topic discussed was the community service program through the dispatch of UGM KKN-PPM students, which is expected to help expedite disaster management.
“BNPB welcomes with open arms any UGM KKN-PPM students who can help at the evacuation site, especially those in the medical field, to assist with the health problems of evacuees,” Agus Riyanto said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Sugiharto hopes to receive ideas on resolving the problem of breached embankments causing floods, which can be done through the KKN-PPM program or other community service programs.
