Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has again been included in the list of the world’s top universities, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) 2025.
Out of 2,092 universities from 115 countries, UGM secured the second spot in Indonesia, after Universitas Indonesia, and placed 12th in Southeast Asia. Globally, UGM is ranked between 1201 and 1500.
Seven Indonesian institutions made the list of universities ranked between 800 and 1500. In addition to UGM and Universitas Indonesia, the other institutions include Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Binus University, Universitas Sebelas Maret, and Institut Teknologi Bandung.
THE WUR rankings are based on several key indicators: Teaching (29.50%), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), Industry Income (4%), and International Outlook (7.50%).
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia expressed her appreciation for THE WUR rankings, which placed UGM second in Indonesia and 12th in Southeast Asia.
Although UGM’s international ranking remains between 1201 and 1500, the same as last year, Professor Emilia noted improvements in specific evaluation indicators.
“We’ve seen increases in the Research Environment, Research Quality, and Industry Income indicators,” the rector said on Tuesday (Oct. 15).
According to THE WUR rankings, UGM improved in the Research Environment indicator, with its score rising from 19.8 to 21.8.
Research Quality also increased, going from 21.7 to 26.2, while Industry Income rose from 52.8 to 56.4. The Teaching indicator, however, remained unchanged, with a score of 30.9.
Professor Emilia expressed optimism about the university’s educational processes and research quality, as reflected in the improved scores. She hopes to optimize the indicators further in the future.
“These results motivate us to continuously improve,” she concluded.
