A sociologist from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Wahyu Kustiningsih, said that young people are vulnerable, especially when experiencing mental health issues.
“There is a significant burden and disability related to mental health conditions, especially among those whose problems begin in their youth,” she explained on Thursday (27/7) during Sekolah Wartawan at the UGM Central Building.
Kustiningsih said that mental health conditions have a significant impact on the development of young people and their social and economic integration.
Various factors trigger mental health issues in society, including among young people, such as the influence of advancements in information and communication technology, social and economic problems, and cultural factors.
Traumatic experiences, including adverse childhood events, also affect young people worldwide but are ubiquitous in post-conflict or disaster situations. Traumatic experiences may include the death of parents, abuse, or becoming a refugee.
“A study also mentioned that mental health problems in adolescents are related to their level of education and region,” she added.
Certain groups of young people are at particular risk of mental health conditions. Additionally, stigma still exists among young people, a significant barrier to mental health services.
The sociologist emphasized expanding and increasing mental health facilities and services. Some universities in Indonesia have initiated crisis centers to address mental health issues among students and other campus residents. However, many others still need to establish such centers.
Furthermore, there is currently a lack of precise data on mental health issues and the needs of young people during transitional stages. This data is essential for mapping and addressing the existing problems.
She added that a public health approach is crucial in preventing behavior and mental health conditions. This is particularly important in tackling this issue at a global level.
