The Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Professor Ova Emilia, emphasized that innovative works by students deemed potential by the university will be registered for Intellectual Property (IP) protection.
The rector conveyed this during a gathering with the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama) in East Java and 54 Student Creativity Program (PKM) teams participating in the 37th National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas), held on Thursday (Oct. 17) at Prima Rasa restaurant in Surabaya.
Rector Emilia highlighted that UGM is preparing a management system to ensure all student creations are grantedIntellectual Property (IP) protection. This will benefit students as their creations represent a collective pride.
“We hope this will materialize soon, and currently, we are refining the management model for intellectual property at UGM,” she explained.
Due to changes in the current education system, UGM aims to file for IP protection on every student’s creation. While education used to focus mainly on classroom learning, it now extends beyond the classroom.
“Street knowledge, as it’s often called, is the knowledge acquired through experience. It is learned through interactions, where students can form networks with various people. With accomplished alumni present here, students can learn from them how to succeed,” she added.
On this occasion, Rector Emilia appreciated the Kagama East Java administrators for warmly welcoming UGM’s Pimnas contingent. She emphasized the essential need for collaboration between alumni and their alma mater.
“We realize that the university’s success is largely supported by its alumni,” she said.
Satriyo Gentur Pinandito, the head of Kagama East Java, stated that his organization is ready to support the advancement of UGM, including backing the UGM student contingent competing in the 37th Pimnas at Airlangga University, Surabaya.
He also hoped that the UGM Pimnas team would again emerge as the overall champion.
“This time, Kagama East Java is helping to ensure the success of UGM’s student team at Pimnas 37,” he said.
Following Pimnas, Pinandito noted that Kagama East Java is also preparing to welcome 43 UGM teams participating in the Indonesian Ship Design Competition.
“Although we can’t provide 100% support, we’re at least playing a role in facilitating UGM teams,” he explained.
Pinandito also wished for UGM’s written exam centers to reopen in East Java province.
“There is a lot of interest and potential in East Java. Additionally, Kagama East Java’s branches, from Ngawi to Banyuwangi, are ready to welcome students who will be doing community service here,” he added.
Brian Arianto, the leader of UGM’s Pimnas delegation, mentioned that UGM successfully sent the largest number of PKM teams to this year’s Pimnas competition. Fifty-four teams participated in both presentation and poster categories, which had been held since Monday (Oct. 14).
“We are hopeful of achieving the best results. We hope that through this event, we can become a quality generation and contribute to our respective fields of study to create the Golden Generation of 2045,” he concluded.
