Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) sent two representatives from the UGM Model United Nations (MUN) community to participate in an international event organized by the ASEAN University Network.
The event was held at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya from Oct. 22 to 27.
The two students, Christansya Eliora Manossoh (FEB UGM 2022), represented Indonesia in the Educational Forum, while Filolita Zatadini Prasetya (Fisipol UGM 2022) competed in the Young Speakers Contest.
After successfully progressing through the preliminary rounds, Filolita Prasetya won the top prize in the Young Speakers Contest. Her speech centered on teacher empowerment under the main theme, “Emancipatory Education as a Path Towards an Emancipated Future.”
She discussed the role of emancipatory education as an ASEAN+3 solution to empower youth in building a sustainable future and supporting the digital and innovation era.
“Each participant was evaluated by a panel of five judges consisting of experts and political figures,” she said.
Prasetya expressed her joy at participating in such a regional forum and shared her pride in winning the main prize at the Young Speakers Contest.
“I am thrilled to have earned this trust and hope to continue growing in the future,” she said.
A similar theme was discussed in the Educational Forum, where Christansya Manossoh participated. The competition began with each country presenting its position, followed by group discussions on three aspects of emancipatory education: social, environmental, and political.
This forum aims to present a joint statement, which will be considered at upcoming ASEAN meetings via the ASEAN Secretariat and Senior Official Meeting on Youth (SOMY).
Manossoh actively contributed to the discussions and was selected as one of four lead speakers to deliver the joint statement at the committee’s final session.
“This was an unforgettable experience,” said Manossoh.
The ASEAN+3 forum included 18 leading universities from countries such as Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, including prestigious institutions like Chulalongkorn University, the University of the Philippines, and Xiamen University.
The success of UGM’s two representatives at this event reflects the UGM MUN Community’s commitment to enhancing and developing its members’ skills and building a strong reputation nationally and internationally.
