Laboratory work is a crucial part of the learning process. Through practical lab work, students can conduct experiments using laboratory equipment.
Unfortunately, efforts to familiarize students with laboratory equipment have not been optimal due to limited time and the number of instructors.
Yet, detailed knowledge about laboratory equipment is essential because each piece requires specific handling. If students make mistakes in using lab equipment, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
This issue prompted students from the UGM Faculty of Engineering, including Raynaldi Farhan Ghiffary, Dewi Ratna Sari, Nisrina Ahnafa Qatrunnada, Isaac Varado, and I Putu Buddhi Gunawan, to create a book called “Tour de Lab,” which introduces laboratory equipment.
Raynaldi Ghiffary explained that the book was created as an attractive means to introduce laboratory equipment, incorporating augmented reality (AR) technology and voiceovers. The book’s strength lies in its ability to facilitate two learning styles of students: visual and auditory.
“The book is designed to be visually engaging so students are more enthusiastic about understanding laboratory equipment. Moreover, it is based on augmented reality technology, which can display real-time 3D visual objects,” he said.
The book also includes voiceovers to cater to students with an auditory learning style. Its content is aligned with the curriculum, making it a valuable classroom companion.
“We hope the book will be well-received by school-age students and contribute to preventing workplace accidents in laboratories,” he added.
