Students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have developed a broiler and layer chicken feed by combining Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae and Moringa leaves.
The product, Maglor, offers an efficient and eco-friendly feed solution and contributes to improving livestock health and product quality.
This livestock feed development was undertaken by a group of students consisting of Dewi Kumala Ayu (Food Technology and Agricultural Products, 2023), Sabrina Nur Anisa (Agricultural Engineering, 2022), Khayatun Nisa (Agricultural Engineering, 2022), Aurelia Nadiyah Prayudanti (Animal Science and Industry, 2022), and Dhedi Hasyim Darmawan (Public Sector Accounting, 2023), under the guidance of Mohammad Sofi’ul Anam.
Dewi Kumala Ayu explained to reporters on Saturday (Aug. 10) that the Maglor feed they developed is an organic supplement made from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae and Moringa leaves.
“This product is designed to enhance the feed efficiency of broiler and layer chickens,” she stated.
Regarding the use of BSF maggots, Ayu acknowledged that it is due to their high protein content, which is excellent for livestock feed. Moreover, these larvae are easy to cultivate. They are rich in nutrients such as protein, essential fatty acids, and minerals required by chickens.
“The use of BSF maggots also helps reduce organic waste, as these larvae can consume organic waste,” she explained.
Sabrina Anisa elaborated on the selection of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera), noting that the plant contains essential nutrients like protein, secondary metabolites, antioxidants, and carotenoids, enhancing livestock productivity and growth.
“In the livestock industry, Moringa leaves are known to boost the immunity of animals and improve the quality of meat and eggs produced. Moringa is also easy to cultivate and has a relatively quick harvest cycle,” Anisa added.
She hoped the Maglor supplement would positively change the poultry industry, especially for broiler and layer chickens.
The Maglor product offers an efficient, eco-friendly feed solution combining BSF maggots and moringa leaves. It contributes to improving livestock health and product quality.
“We hope these creative ideas can have a tangible impact on entrepreneurship and sustainability,” she concluded.
