Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and PT Harmoni Panca Utama (HPU) have agreed to provide students with opportunities to undertake mining industry internships and develop their skills before graduation.
This agreement was formalized in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the tri-dharma of higher education. It was signed by the UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, and the President Director of PT Harmoni Panca Utama, Ahmad Kharis, on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, in Multimedia Room 1, UGM Central Office.
Professor Udasmoro stated that the collaboration is a tangible example of how industry and academia can work together to produce future professionals in the mining sector.
“With this MoU and Career Development Program Agreement, it is hoped that UGM students can take advantage of these opportunities and contribute to the advancement of the mining industry in Indonesia,” she said.
The signing agreement for this cooperation was also part of UGM Career Preparation Class 2024, which prepares final-year students and recent graduates for the professional world.
Professor Udasmoro emphasized the importance of career information for becoming a professional and encouraged participants and UGM students to remain confident and continue developing themselves to achieve promising careers.
“We also hope that many of our students will join mining companies and collaborate with HPU,” she added.
President Director Kharis affirmed that the cooperation could continue, and HPU is committed to providing opportunities for students to participate in management training.
“If needed, we are also open to giving public lectures on mining to any department at any time,” he said.
In his public lecture, Ahmad Kharis, a UGM Geological Engineering program alumnus, explained that the mining industry involves substantial investment, capital, labor, equipment, and complex risks.
He detailed that mining is an industry requiring significant investment and involves risks such as commodity price fluctuations, government regulations, and environmental impacts.
He stressed the importance of careful management to minimize adverse environmental effects, particularly regarding deforestation.
“Therefore, all mining companies must submit an Annual Work Plan and Budget as a risk mitigation measure,” he added.
He also encouraged participants to find their passion in related fields, such as the oil and gas industry, construction, hydrology, geology, and disaster mitigation.
“A career in the mining industry is not limited to fieldwork. There are many opportunities in offices, such as in supply chain management, finance, and statistical analysis,” President Director Kharis said.
PT HPU has been established for 13 years and continues to commit to adding value to stakeholders through various initiatives.
Johannes Kevin, HPU General Affairs, explained that HPU has nine projects in Borneo and three HMDP projects in Kalimantan and North Maluku.
“We’re continuously developing, and in the HMDP program, we offer certifications and career development starting from supervisor positions,” he said.
