Three students from the Department of Geological Engineering, UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM) achieved a remarkable feat by winning first place in the Smart Competition BOREYES 2024, organized by SPE Padjadjaran University SC on May 10–11, 2024.
The three students who named their team KL Survivor comprised Muhamad Rival Ferdiansah (2021), Nishfu Laila Habibah (2021), and Carladibra Harjanti Nayono (2022). They successfully outperformed 37 teams from prestigious universities in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Smart Competition BOREYES 2024 is part of a series of events from BOREYES 2024 organized by SPE Padjajaran University SC. The competition, formatted as a quiz in the oil and gas sector, covers knowledge in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, drilling, drilling mud, reservoirs, production, and the oil and gas business.
Rival Ferdiansah explained that the competition was conducted in four stages, beginning with the Pre-elimination Round, which was held online via Zoom.
“In this stage, each team was given 15 questions, and only the 12 teams with the highest scores could proceed to the next stage offline at Padjajaran University (Unpad),” said Ferdiansah in a release sent on Thursday (Jun. 20).
The second stage was the Ranking Phase: Crossword Puzzle, where each team received a sheet of paper with 15 questions to be answered in a crossword format. The third stage was the Elimination Round, where teams competed head-to-head according to a bracket to answer toss-up questions. Three of the 12 teams advanced to the final stage, the Final Round: Alphabet Game.
In the final stage, the three teams competed for the championship title. The KL Survivor Team triumphed with a score of 120, followed by the Geoslay Team, also from UGM, with a score of 90, and the Sofire Team from Pertamina University with a score of 40.
Under the guidance of Dr. Sarju Winardi, Ferdiansah expressed joy and pride in winning the competition, as he and his teammates have a strong interest in the oil and gas sector. This competition allowed them to test their knowledge in the field, gain experience, and build relationships with students and practitioners in the oil and gas industry.
“From this competition, we also gained valuable experiences, new knowledge, and new friends from other universities with different study backgrounds,” he said.
During the competition preparation period, Nishfu Laila Habibah admitted that she and her team had to memorize thousands of English terms. This process demanded not only high concentration but also extraordinary patience.
“Mastering these terminologies will be an added advantage in this competition,” said Habibah.
This competition was particularly memorable for Habibah as it was her first time winning first place. She hopes to achieve similar success in future competitions.
“We hope our achievement will inspire other students to participate in competitions and achieve accomplishments representing UGM Geological Engineering,” she concluded.
