Students from Universitas Gadjah Mada have triumphed in the idea debate competition titled Idea Clash, with the theme “Enhancing the Youth Development Index (YDI) of Indonesia,” held on Feb. 4 at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Building, Jakarta.
Among 169 competing teams, UGM proudly dispatched two teams, securing first and third place. These accomplished teams are the Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha Team and the Ethical Nationalist Educated Intellectual and Vocal Youth Team.
The Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha Team comprises Reinhart Timothy (Faculty of Engineering) and Ryan Kusnadi (Faculty of Engineering), while the Ethical Nationalist Educated Intellectual and Vocal Youth Team consists of Jason Samvero (Faculty of Law) and Brian Hose (Faculty of Economics and Business).
In a press release issued on Monday (Feb. 12), Reinhart Timothy shared that participants in this competition ranged from youths aged 16 to 30 years and were open to the public.
The competition featured two stages: essay selection and debate rounds. The top 16 teams, including both UGM teams, were selected after the essay selection phase, advancing to the quarterfinals and engaging in offline competitions.
“Following our qualification, we engaged in the debate rounds, encompassing quarterfinals, semifinals, and grand finals,” explained Timothy.
Timothy highlighted that the debate format employed in the competition adhered to the British Parliamentary System, a format commonly utilized in various national and international student debate competitions.
He expressed gratitude for his team’s progression to the final round of the idea debate competition. Timothy attributed this national championship achievement to the collective efforts of all team members and the invaluable assistance and support extended by all stakeholders.
“Undoubtedly, this accomplishment is expected to inspire students to pursue excellence and attain further success on the national and international debate platforms,” he affirmed.
As widely recognized, the idea debate competition organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports is part of the Young Voters Festival, aimed at bolstering youth engagement in the 2024 election.
The event encompasses three core activities: the Young Voters Talkshow, the Presidential Debate Watching Party 2024, and the Idea Clash at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
