Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) have agreed to collaborate on education, research, community service, and institutional development.
This partnership is an extension of various collaborations that have been ongoing since 2014.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by UGM’s Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, and the Head of the Education and Training Division of the Chief of Police Staff for Human Resources (SSDM Polri), Police Commissioner Defrian Donimando, on Wednesday (Nov. 13) at UGM’s Central Office.
Professor Udasmoro welcomed the collaboration between the two institutions.
According to the professor, UGM is the most comprehensive university in Indonesia. It has four academic clusters: the health cluster, the science and engineering cluster, the agro-complex cluster, and the socio-humanities cluster. All of these clusters cover aspects relevant to the social and cultural life of the Indonesian people.
“For example, our Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM) and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) have strengths in the field of Artificial Intelligence, which will certainly be the future for all of us,” she said.
On that occasion, Professor Udasmoro invited Polri to enhance the quality of its human resources by sending its members to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees in various faculties at UGM.
She also mentioned UGM’s plan to introduce an interdisciplinary criminology program.
“We also have a National Resilience program at the Graduate School, though most of the current students come from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI),” she added.
In his speech, Commissioner Donimando revealed that Polri had initiated cooperation with 72 institutions, including ministries, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), private universities, and public universities.
He stated that the collaboration with UGM is part of the President’s directive under the Astacita program for human resource development.
“Polri is committed to creating excellent human resources to realize Indonesia Emas 2045 through cooperation with universities across Indonesia,” he explained.
In supporting the new administration’s vision and mission, the police commissioner added that Polri is not only tasked with law enforcement but also with creating harmonious collaboration, communication, and coordination to address challenges in strengthening human resource development, science, and educational technology in the era of globalization.
“We hope that this cooperation will enhance the synergy between Polri and UGM in improving the competence and capabilities of Polri personnel in facing current and future challenges,” Commissioner Donimando concluded.
