The Biodiversity Curator Professional Program (PKKH) at the UGM Faculty of Biology has officially received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), which is valid for five years.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for PKKH as the first professional program of its kind in Asia and the second in the world dedicated to training highly competent and professional biodiversity curators.
The program offers a one-year (two-semester) curriculum, and graduates earn the title Kur.Biodiv. or Bio.Cur. in English.
Dean of the UGM Faculty of Biology, Professor Budi Setiadi Daryono, stated that the accreditation reflects the program’s strong commitment and readiness to deliver high-quality professional education.
It also serves as tangible proof of the program’s vision to produce biodiversity curators who embody Pancasila’s values and excel in professionalism, cultural awareness, creativity, innovation, and collaboration at both national and international levels.
“The Biodiversity Biocurator Program at the UGM Faculty of Biology is the first and only one in Asia,” said Dean Daryono on Thursday (Apr. 24).
The dean expressed his hope that this program will allow UGM to explore and document Indonesia’s vast biodiversity in land and marine environments.
Through this program, he believes it is possible to train competent curators and experts who can safeguard, catalog, analyze, and map future trends in Indonesia’s biodiversity.
He added that the program is expected to continue strengthening the capacity and quality of human resources for managing biodiversity.
Dean Daryono also emphasized that these experts could become change agents in their workplaces, helping improve human resource development.
“Going forward, we hope this program can be implemented at other universities. UGM must continue to lead by example for the nation. Hopefully, in the next ten years, the majority of the world’s biocurators will come from Indonesia. That’s my hope,” he stated.
With an adaptive curriculum aligned with professional needs and strategic collaboration with institutional partners both nationally and internationally, the PKKH program continues to enhance the quality of its education.
It emphasizes integrity, competence, and leadership in the field of biodiversity conservation and management.
“By focusing on the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources, the program also contributes to efforts in protecting, restoring, and sustainably utilizing both terrestrial and marine ecosystems,” he concluded.
