Driven by the urgency of climate change, countries worldwide are embracing energy transformation. Indonesia is one of the nations marching hand-in-hand toward a greener future.
The UGM Energy Student Council took the initiative to introduce children to energy through the Energy School program held in collaboration with the Memetri Wiji Cultural Studio in Tanaman Village, Sleman Regency.
This program aims to provide children with an understanding of biodiversity and energy sources and introduce the concept of renewable energy through wide-ranging, fun learning methods and activities, inviting children to explore energy sources in their surroundings.
“The children learn the materials in Javanese, supported by the Memetri Wiji Cultural Studio that strives to preserve Javanese culture amidst the onslaught of digitalization and modernization,” said team member Sophie on Monday (December 11).
The Energy School ran for three days through October-November 2023, with its first meeting on October 29, inviting children to sing Javanese songs together.
Memetri Wiji manager Nur led the school to sing Javanese songs with clarity and softness at the start and end of the meetings. Upon completion, children received education on using animal manure as fertilizer for biogas energy.
While exploring the village and nearby paddy fields, children were invited to see firsthand the benefits of animal manure fertilizer on agricultural land.
The excitement of the first meeting continued to the second and third meetings on November 5 and November 12, with materials on using windmills as an alternative energy source and waste management.
“I thank the UGM team for the collaboration with Memetri Wiji. We hope children will be even more excited about learning. Wishing you a future full of success and prosperity,” the manager expressed.
