The collaboration between Indonesia and the United Kingdom has been ongoing for over 70 years. This time, the new UK Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Dominic Jermey, CVO, OBE, visited the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences on Friday (November 17).
“I see Indonesia as rich in culture, nature, and customs. Especially your culinary delights; they are incredible. I hope the UK and Indonesia can cooperate well so we can share,” said Ambassador Jermey.
He explained the richness of Indonesia is invaluable. Therefore, efforts are needed to develop these assets to help Indonesia become an advanced nation. As a developed country, the UK has a mission to assist Indonesia in achieving these aspirations.
Other countries also experience various issues faced by Indonesia. One of the most pressing issues is the impact of climate change.
The ambassador explained that the UK also struggles with climate change, especially as a country with four seasons, where energy availability is crucial for the population.
The challenge for the government is to provide large-scale energy while contributing to reducing carbon emissions. As for Indonesia, the country is experiencing a prolonged drought, which also concerns energy availability.
“The natural wealth of Indonesia holds great potential. Meanwhile, we have five of the world’s best universities in the UK. So, with these two advantages, the two countries can help each other and develop together towards a more advanced direction,” said Ambassador Jermey.
The current role of young people is crucial in developing all these potentials. Like the previous generation, the current generation is responsible for ensuring a good life for the next generation.
He also elaborated on the importance of bilateral cooperation in the academic field. Knowledge is the foundation for a country to advance. Each country has its academic focus and tendencies. In this regard, collaboration between countries is needed to share the knowledge they possess.
Therefore, the ambassador strongly supported Indonesian students pursuing education in the UK. Through this process, the UK not only helps Indonesian children get advanced education but also provides an opportunity for young Indonesians to internationalize the nation’s culture.
“I believe you all have high potential in your respective fields. Whether academic, sports, or arts, it needs to be developed. Academic cooperation can open opportunities for two universities and two countries to share. Therefore, I hope this cooperation will continue to thrive,” concluded Ambassador Jermey.
