Panut Mulyono, Dean of Faculty of Engineering UGM, has been elected Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) for the period of 2017-2022.
Apart from his busy schedules as Dean, he is also known as a lecturer with good discipline doing lecture and research in Chemical Engineering.
“He is a lecturer who is active, disciplined, whilst also writing publications. When someone is tasked with administrative job, research is usually delayed. But he still can manage,” said his fellow lecturer, Prof. Ir. Rochmadi, S.U., Ph.D.
Rochmadi said in their department, Panut was known as lecturer who focuses on energy. He has produced new findings that became the basis for further research.
“One of his research that I think is interesting is on thermal energy storing with a new model, developed through crystallisation. This is a basic research for the next research,” said he.
Other research done by Panut is related to the system that use heat as energy saving in the industry as well as purification system of carboxylic acids using reactive extraction.
According to Rochmadi, this research showed the capacity of Panut as an academics and researcher. This had been seen since he became an engineering student and then appointed junior lecturer afterwards. Panut had the chance to study at Tokyo Institute of Technology to get his graduate and doctoral degrees.
He has been entrusted to manage scientific journals, being expert editor for Journal of Technology and editor for Journal of Chemical Engineering Indonesia. Panut is also active in community services.
For all this achievements, Panut can be the role model for fellow lecturers to do their responsibilities as educator as well as researcher, beside for the students to continue developing their capacities academically and in character.
“Prof. Panut is known as someone who is disciplined, open and helpful. Students like him and he is familiar with people,” said Rochmadi.
Now with the new responsibilities for Panut as Rector of UGM, Rochmadi hoped his colleague would still give attention to his responsibilities as educator. He hoped Panut would be a good leader that serves as a role model.
“I understand as a rector, his burden will get bigger. But I hope he would still remain the same in terms of quality and attention as he had shown so far,” he concluded.
