Prior to graduation ceremony for undergraduate and diploma students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), UGM invited two alumni to share their experience to the new graduates on Tuesday (16/5) in Grha Sabha Pramana UGM. They are Head of Satellite Project of PT Telkom, Tonda Priyanto, and founder of Green Indonesia, Chandra Kirana Prijosusilo.
Tonda said the current work market was not the same with the one of his time years ago. Developments in technology and connectivity have caused uncertainties and unpredictable changes.
“The predictions for the future only last for 5 – 10 years, so it’s very changing indeed. Here uncertainties remain, and many disruptive changes, while the world is getting more complex,” he said.
That’s why he asked the new graduates to prepare themselves before they enter the work force, as well as thinking seriously about their goals and targets. He further told them about the importance of having value for them to hold on to for work and interact with other people.
“We are living in a world which is collaborative and cooperative, which is actually the value of Universitas Gadjah Mada, too. Alumni of UGM have values that you have to stick to,” he said.
Furthermore, alumni of UGM have to dream beyond their personal goals, one that needs to be achieved by Indonesia and the world. With these values and determination, he said, the alumni would surely find a way to achieve their dream.
“Just give it a try. You will find the way out. Make your dream come true,” said Tonda.
Meanwhile, Chandra Kirana talked about the various ways in career to be taken by university graduates. In the future, he said, there would be many new jobs emerging that are still unimaginable by the people living today. Despite this fact, he said that there was still one point staying the same at work market in the past or future, namely confidence.
“Indonesia lacks of confidence recently. Mutual trust is very low, and we also see the gap between behaviour and value, which gets very wide,” he said.
He mentioned the fact of social gap amidst the progressive development between the rich and the poor, which increases the gap and leads to negative impacts. In this condition, he encouraged the graduates to be able to contribute to the nation and be a leader that is trustable by the people.
