The need for actuary profession is increasing due to growth of industry in Indonesia. Since three years ago, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) launched a program to create 1,000 actuaries but until now there are only 400. Collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and Jasindo insurance, supported by the FSA and the Society of Actuaries of Indonesia (PAI), is one attempt to create more professionals in actuaries profession.
Vice Dean of Research, Community Service and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Prof. Mudasir, said cooperation in actuarial education profession was thought to attract the interest of students to work as an actuary after graduating. “The government has conducted 1,000 actuarial programs. There is already a rule for every company to have minimum number of actuarial. During this time many actuaries do not come from Indonesia,” he said.
Narstiti Eviat Lutfi, Deputy Director of Jasindo, said the national insurance industry was facing the era of the labor market. It is possible that non-Indonesian actuaries have started to enter Indonesia. “Are we going to allow them or ourselves to meet the needs of the industry? We must prepare the human resource of insurance,” he said.
According to Narstiti, cooperation between UGM and Jasindo is expected to create reliable actuarial graduates that will be needed by many companies. “Jasindo hopes this cooperation will generate a strong synergy to create actuary. There are enough opportunities for actuaries to take part in the world insurance industry,” he said.
President of Actuaries of Indonesia (PAI) Rianto Djojosugito Ahmadi, said the number of members of PAI currently around 400 people. Many of them have been inactive. “We have a shortage of actuaries in the industrialized world,” he said.
He added that actuary is also needed in the insurance company. He says there are 119 insurance companies in Indonesia, consisting of life insurance and general insurance. “In fact they already have actuary, but the number is not enough,” he said.
To create actuary, Rianto believes universities should open up many actuarial study program. However, the business is not easy since it takes a very long process. Even so, said Rianto, several public and private universities have also been willing to open an actuarial study program in the next few years. “Strengthening human resources is in universities. I dream of Actuaries study program being set up as soon as possible in Indonesia,” he concluded.
