YOGYAKARTA – UGM Students of Engineering Physics had the opportunity to present their paper at the International Conference on Sustainable Energy Engineering and Application (ICSEEA) 2012. The Conference was organized by the Research Centre for Electrical Power and Mechatronics, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), from 6-8 November 2012 in Hotel Inna Garuda, Yogyakarta. The conference raised the theme "Biomass and Solar Energy for Sustainable Development" on the development and utilization of the two renewable energy sources.
Agus Setiawan presented a paper entitled "Community Development in Solar Energy Utilization to Support Fish Farming in Sendangsari Village", and Igib Prasetyaningsari presented a paper entitled "Design Optimization of Solar Powered Aeration System for Fish Pond in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta by HOMER Software".
In his presentation, Agus Setiawan conveyed the role of Indonesian student in encouraging the use of renewable energy through the community empowerment. Students act as a catalyst in the community as well as a bridge of communication between the community and government. "Students can channel their role in a forum such as Field Work in Student Creativity Program (PKM)," Agus said in a press release sent to reporters, Monday (12/11).
The PKM-M, according to Agus, although not passing PIMNAS (National Students Scientific Week), includes many activities conducted by students which give benefit to the community. "Solving local problems means participating to resolve global problems," he said.
Meanwhile, Igib Prasetyaningsari’s paper began with the field work where she designed a solar power generation system for fisheries aeration in Minggir area of Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. The aeration systems use a blower with electrical energy source from solar panels mounted on the fishing pond. "The use of solar-powered aeration encourages productive activities of society, promotes renewable energy and reduces the impact of global warming," she explained.
There are 61 papers from 16 countries being presented in this conference. As many as 48 papers were in the oral presentation and 13 papers in the poster session. The topics covered in this conference include biomass for bioenergy, biomass conversion technology, renewable fuel from biomass, photovoltaic systems and materials, assessment solar thermal, solar building, heating and cooling and biofuels or solar economics and commercialization.
This conference also invited speakers, including Prof. Dr. Craig Froome of the Global Change Institute, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, Prof. Dr. Rosli Bin Abu Bakar of Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Malaysia, Ir. Tumiran, M.Eng, Ph.D. of the National Energy Council (DEN), Head of Renewable Energy Division of PT. PLN Ir. Moch. Sofyan, Prof. Dr. Mukesh T. Pandya from Mumbai University, India, and Prof. Dr. Kanit Wattanavichien from Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University.
