Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. Dr. Pratikno, M.Soc., Sc formally accepted 9,753 new students of Undergraduate and Vocational School Diploma Program for academic year 2012/2013. UGM admission ceremony took place in the Grha Sabha Pramana yard, Thursday (30/8), marked by the giving of university jacket by the Rector to the four new students, M. Rizki. A, Thomas Pierre, Laura Rainwald and Sabirin Wahyu Wardani. It was followed by torch lighting as a sign of the start of New Student Success Learning Training (PPSMB) UGM. "Welcome to UGM, welcome to the best university in Indonesia! You are very fortunate to have this rare opportunity," he said in his remarks.
The Rector said, UGM is university of struggle formed simultaneously with Indonesia’s revolution. In this campus, the nation’s best sons and daughters in the 1940s gathered together to learn. "That is what is often said to be the identity of UGM as the University of Struggle, national university with students coming from 33 provinces of Indonesia," he said.
As a university of struggle and populist university, the Rector added, UGM always considers the interests of the people. As the University of Pancasila, UGM is always keen to develop state ideology and that is what makes this campus has a great responsibility towards the progress of Indonesia.
Indonesia is predicted to be a big country, and some analyzes predict that before 2050, it will be among the top ten countries in the world. "However, it would require hard work. All does not come by itself and Universitas Gadjah Mada must guard this nation to become a fair, prosperous and dignified nation in the international arena," he added.
Therefore, the Rector reminded the new students of a very big responsibility. He hoped UGM can contribute significantly to the advancement of Indonesia. "Your seniors have proven it, we not only become the best university in Indonesia, not only the largest university in Indonesia, but your seniors have demonstrated achievements up to the international level. This is our time to lead the world, this is the time we lead Asia, therefore we must be united," he said.
He described that UGM is the most comprehensive university with 18 faculties and two schools, the vocational school and graduate school. The completeness of science is certainly not owned by other universities in Indonesia. "If we can work together across faculties, if we can work together across disciplines, the crucial problems in Indonesia will be solved, starting from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Therefore, in the first day of PPSMB you are invited to gather with your friends from other faculties, so that new students can be friends, getting to know each other from other faculties, you no longer see the difference in disciplines. Different interests, different ethnic origin gather together for the advancement of Indonesia," the Rector said.
In his report the Director of Academic Administration, Dr. Agr. Ir. Sri Peni Wastutiningsih, said there are as many as 9,753 UGM new students, consisting of 4,123 Undergraduate and Diploma students from the invitation system, 5,282 Undergraduate and Diploma students from the written exam entrance, and 348 International Program and foreign students.
They come from 295 regencies/cities and 1492 high/vocational schools, while 52 of the total 348 students of International Programs and foreign students come from Kyrgyzstan, Korea and Malaysia. "The youngest student (14 years old) is Diyah Utami Kusumaning Putri of Computer Science Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences," she said.
On this occasion the Rector was accompanied by Director of Student Affairs UGM, Dr. Senawi, M.P. Both were pleased to award UGM students who have made achievements at national and international levels.
The award was given to Vierna Tasya Wensatama, the winner of the 16th Alsa National English Competition, Ridwan Widoyoko and friends who successfully won 2 gold and 1 silver in Robogames 2012 in San Mateo, California USA, Erwin Salbila and friends, the champion on International Humanitarian Law Debate 2012, An Nuur Budi Utama, the winner of the National Trades and Services Young Entrepreneur Competition, Bachtiar Chandra Permana and friends, the champion on the National Robot Contest and Ananda Prima Yurista and friends, the champion on Legislative Drafting Competition.
The awards were also given to Made Tantrawan, Iwan Ernanto and Khoirul Faiq Muzakka, the gold medalists On MIPA-PT 2012 of Mathematics and Physics, Damar Satrio Guntoro, Febry Mulia Wardhana, Septian Jamaluddin Zakky, Sukma Langgeng Nanda Titis Praba Kusuma, Fikri Meitri Makhluf, the champion on Java Robot Contest 2012, Amir Abdul Aziz and Nabila Aghniarisqa Olivia, the champion on Surabaya Debate Event 2012. The award was also given to UGM delegates for the 25th National Student Scientific Week who won gold, silver and bronze medals.
