YOGYAKARTA- Former Speaker of People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Prof. Dr. Amien Rais, M.A encourages new students from Department of International Relations UGM 2011 to dare to make change. As potential future leaders, the students are expected to be intellectuals so they can make useful changes to the progress of Indonesia. This was stated by Amien Rais at a general lecture in front of hundreds of new students from Department of International Relations 2011.
"Not just being intellectua, but also intelligence that can make change, which is useful to the nation," Amien said at Graduate Seminar Room, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences on Saturday (17/9).
Amien emphasized that it is appropriate for the students to enter the Department of International Relations UGM. He thought that graduates of this Department have a bright prospect and could become flexible in the work place anywhere as bureaucrats, diplomats, ambassadors, professors, etc. Therefore, he hoped that students can utilize and optimize the time for study on campus in order to achieve the ideals.
"Graduates of International Relations are flexible, whether as bureaucrats, ambassadors, diplomats, mayors, etc.," he said.
The Chairman of UGM Board of Trustees said with the current course condition which is different and easy, students have much convenience to complete their study. Learning system in International Relations, Amien said, also provides a strong foundation for students to continue studies at a higher level both in S2 and S3.
"Graduates of International Relations will have different characteristics from other majors here," said Amien who was accompanied by a member of faculty of International Relations UGM, Drs. Dafri Agussalim, M.A.
Amien also advised the new students to not forget the national heroes such as Bung Karno who has a passion to continue to make change for the improvement of the nation. One thing to learn from the founding father is not to stop reading and thinking critically.
