The information overflow in the digital age makes the role of information and library science experts increasingly needed, not only in the library, but also in all organizations and offices. All need information and library science experts to organize information that will be stored systematically. "That way, information is easily accessed and utilized optimally by the organization," said library expert of Cologne University of Germany, Prof. Dr. Ursulla Georgy, in the seminar The Challenge of Library and Information Science Education, which is recently held at UGM Graduate School Seminar Room.
Ursulla Georgy said such of needs that should be adopted by the curriculum of Information and Library Management. In Indonesia, only four state universities offer S-2 education in the field of information and library science, namely UI (the Faculty of Cultural Sciences), Padjadjaran University (Faculty of Communication Sciences), Bogor Agricultural Institute (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences), and UGM (Graduate School).
"From year to year, the needs of stratum 2 graduates of Information and Library Science continued to increase, along with the information overflow in various forms, such as e-book, multi-media information, digital journals and others. Unfortunately, the number of graduates has not been sufficient to meet all those needs," she said, adding that some state universities, such as the University of North Sumatra, are currently preparing to open stratum 2 education of library and information science.
In the seminar it was revealed that up to now there is no college in Indonesia which organizes stratum 3 education in the field of information and library science. Meanwhile, Dr. Nor Edzan of Malaysia conveys that his country already has four colleges that offers the third stratum education in the field of information and library science.
Also attending and presenting in this seminar library and information science experts from UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Dra. Labibah Zein, MLIS, also from UI, USU, Unbraw, and Atma Jaya University.
