One more achievement has been accomplished by students of UGM. This time, the achievement came from the Indonesian Varsities English Debate (IVED) 2011 event. Bella Chyntiara, student of the Faculty of Economics and Business, along with two colleagues, Eldhianto Maulana Jusuf and Urfi Syifa Urohmah, both students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, won the first prize after successfully defeating 56 other participants from throughout Indonesia at the event held at the University of Hasanuddin, Makassar, from 21 to 26 January 2011.
Bella Chyntiara representing her colleagues expressed the joy over their victory. They were proud to be the winners in the competition. "We are proud to achieve victory in this competition. The victory was quite encouraging because IVED is a parliamentary debate competition at university level in Indonesia that is quite prestigious," said the student in International Undergraduate Program, Monday (21/2) on campus.
Bella, Eldhianto and Urfi were motivated to participate in this debate competition in order to hone public speaking skills, critical thinking, as well as to understand all policies and social trends. The formation of the team started from the participation of the three in the UGM English Debating Society (EDS). The team had been formed through internal competition, Bella, Eldhianto and Urfi managed to become the top three students, making them eligible for the IVED competition.
Bella’s enthusiasm in public speaking made her active in various debate competitions. She felt lucky with her penchant because with it she could gain much knowledge and friends from various universities. She has now four achievements, namely third winner of National Economic English Debate at the University of Padjadjaran (2009), third place in all-Java Overland Varsities Home Debate at UI (2010), UGM Delegate in Asian United English Debate (AUDC) in Assumption University, Thailand, (2010), and this prestigious IVED event in Unhas.
