1. Background
High population growth and urbanization rate in urban area are happening in today cities. City has become growing machine both in national and global level. Urban areas have been occupied by half of world population and therefore produce about 80% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the context of Global Climate Change, urban activities have consumed 70% of global energy and produce huge number of green house gases.
In the context of city logistics, the changes have resulted in high mobility of people and goods, high demand of goods incoming to the city. The increase of mobility will eventually increase vehicle volume which will raise problems of congestion, inefficiency, and increase of CO2 emission; therefore, when these urban problems become uncontrollable, the next outcomes are disorder and environmental damage.
The problems as indicate above will require serious attention from related stakeholders, particularly from transportation planners and urban planners. All stakeholders, including transport operators, logistics service providers, governments and academics shall be able to provide solution for city logistics problems which also will contribute to the improvement of sustainable urban transportation and logistics.
As an effort to contribute to find solutions for city logistics problems, the Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies Universitas Gadjah Mada had conducted a research on Rationalizing Indonesia Urban Freight through Inclusive Urban Development in several cities in Indonesia. This seminar is aiming at disseminating the results of this research.
