The Open Science Meeting is a biannual event held as a collaborative project between experts and professionals from Indonesia and The Netherlands. The biannual Open Science Meeting is conducted as a manifestation of the Indonesian-Netherlands agreement called the Joint Working Committee. The spirit of the Open Science Meeting is to address current issues in both countries, particularly those emerging in the last two years, and then to discuss them with the spirit of collaboration and with the passion to seek solution.
Universitas Gadjah Mada has worked together with KNAW since 2002 on various themes conducted by researchers from Indonesia and the Netherlands. Previous themes included agriculture and citizenship. The collaborative projects in the past had clear outputs such as publications, policy brief, and new experts in different fields, to name just a few. UGM is keen on continuing the cooperative scheme and OSM will be a good opportunity to do so.
The last Open Science Meeting was in 2014 in Makassar, with the focus on science and society. The next meeting in January 2017 will be the eighth event of OSM. In 2017, the main theme will be “Towards Resilient Society.” Resilient society is a term that permeates many political agendas the world over. It has become shorthand for what we need to ensure an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable future for our planet. OSM 2017 will put resilient society center stage. Science will be our starting point, but civil society, the private sector and government policymakers are indispensable partners.
