The Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) community mourns the passing of Professor Kodiran, an anthropology professor from the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM). He passed away on Monday (Dec. 16) at 12:45 PM at the age of 85.
Family members and dozens of UGM faculty, staff, and students bid their final farewell to the late professor at the UGM Family Cemetery.
On Tuesday (Dec. 17), a solemn ceremony was held at the UGM Balairung. University officials, faculty members, staff, and students attended, and they expressed their deep condolences to the bereaved family.
The UGM Board of Professors Chair, Professor M. Baiquni, conveyed his profound sorrow and invited the academic community to offer prayers and pay their final respects to the departed.
“May he be granted the best place in Allah’s presence, and may all his good deeds be accepted. We also pray that his family finds strength, patience, and solace in this difficult time,” he said.
Professor Baiquni reminisced about Professor Kodiran as a kind and patient individual who brought comfort to both his academic and professional environments. He described Professor Kodiran as a dedicated and persevering figure who made significant contributions to his field of expertise.
Professor Kodiran was appointed a professor in a UGM Open Senate Meeting on Jun. 3, 2000, 24 years ago. On that occasion, he delivered an inaugural scientific lecture titled “The Development of Culture and Its Implications for Social Change in Indonesia.”
In his speech, he discussed theoretical concepts and mechanisms of cultural dynamics, including diffusion, acculturation, and assimilation. He also illustrated key events concerning societal development and changes, especially those driven by cultural dynamics.
According to his biography, Professor Kodiran was born in Semarang, Central Java, on Aug. 15, 1939. He began his career as an educator in 1967 and was appointed a professor in 1999. During his tenure, he received the UGM 25-Year Loyalty Award in 1992.
