The UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) has opened a series of events for its 69th anniversary on Friday (Sept. 13) in the Fisipol campus hallway.
This year’s theme is “Strengthening Social Initiatives in Response to Democratic Backsliding, Digital Disruption, and the Climate Crisis.” The theme was chosen based on Fisipol UGM’s three flagship focuses aimed at advancing national progress.
In her opening speech, Dr. Fina Itriyati, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni, stated that this year’s anniversary theme aligns with UGM’s overall theme.
“This anniversary celebration is hoped to be more than just a festivity; it should inspire us to become more environmentally conscious,” Dr. Itriyati explained.
She noted that UGM’s initiatives to raise awareness about environmental issues, such as climate change, can be implemented through various university programs, such as reducing plastic use and promoting the use of reusable water bottles.
Dr. Itriyati elaborated that over its 69 years, Fisipol UGM has focused on responding to issues of democracy, digital transformation, energy transition, and green society. This commitment is realized through discussions, policy frameworks, and community service.
Fisipol UGM’s 69th-anniversary events will include panel discussions with political figures and analysts, sports weeks, and a book launch in December.
“I believe this is also an effort to help safeguard democracy and other issues like climate change,” she clarified.
The anniversary opening event began with a healthy exercise session, with all staff enthusiastically participating.
This was followed by a tumpeng decoration competition among Fisipol UGM work units. Participants were required to decorate tumpeng creatively. Each unit sent 4-5 representatives to compete for attractive prizes.
In addition to the exercise and tumpeng competition, Fisipol UGM collaborated with local MSMEs to host a Market Day and Anniversary Bazaar.
Out of 93 applicants, 15 brands were selected to set up booths at the Market Day, offering a variety of food and beverages, including bakpia, sushi, and typical Jogja souvenirs.
The Anniversary Bazaar featured environmentally friendly products from local entrepreneurs. The stands were bustling with students and the academic community of Fisipol UGM.
