The Anthropology Study Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), has been ranked 101–170 globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
This recognition places UGM’s Anthropology Program as the highest-ranked in Indonesia, ahead of Universitas Indonesia in second place. This marks the third consecutive year it has been included among the top global anthropology programs.
Head of the Anthropology Program Professor Atik Triratnawati expressed her pride in the achievement while noting room for improvement.
“Although we are ranked 101–170 this year, after evaluating the data, we actually experienced a slight decline in our ranking,” said Professor Triratnawati on Thursday (Apr. 24) at the UGM Campus.
In 2024, the program was ranked in the 51–110 global range. Professor Triratnawati stated that the department would conduct an internal evaluation to analyze the data and identify the ranking indicators that have not been fully optimized.
She explained that the program benefits from a collaborative academic environment that fosters shared progress. This allows every member to contribute to enhancing academic outcomes despite this year’s results not meeting their full expectations.
She noted that one area of concern was citation tracking, which has yet to be maximized. According to Professor Triratnawati, many citations of publications authored by UGM Anthropology lecturers are often missing from official records.
However, she pointed out that the program has made progress in terms of institutional collaboration, with 15 international and 10 domestic partnerships currently active.
The department also supports alumni tracking efforts, focusing on graduates working in diverse sectors. Additionally, the faculty is encouraging lecturers to publish more books and journal articles and pursue further education, with the long-term goal of attaining full professorship.
“Ranking is not our ultimate goal; it is a bonus that reflects all stakeholders’ hard and smart work. So, in 2025, we will reorganize our human resources and strengthen our publications and collaborations. We hope that by early 2026, the rankings will bring more encouraging news,” Professor Triratnawati concluded.
