Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) student participating in the university’s Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) in Southeast Maluku, Septian Eka Rahmadi, passed away in a boating accident in the waters of Debut, Southeast Maluku, on Tuesday, Jul. 1, 2025, at 15:28 Eastern Indonesian Time.
UGM extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Septian Eka Rahmadi, an undergraduate student in the Information Engineering Study Program, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering, UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM).
“We have lost a young individual full of promise and spirit. May the Almighty grant him the best place by His side, and may the family be given strength and solace,” expressed Dr. Rustamadji, Director of Community Service at UGM, on Tuesday, Jul. 1, 2025.
Eka was known as an intelligent, humble, and dedicated student, both in his academic pursuits and in his community service.
His presence had a profound impact on the academic environment of FT UGM and the broader university community.
“His departure brings profound sorrow, not only to his family and friends but also to his fellow KKN-PPM teammates in the Manyeuw Unit,” he added.
The incident occurred while seven UGM KKN-PPM students, along with five local residents, were collecting sand on Wahru Island as part of a Coral Reef Revitalization Program using the Artificial Patch Reef (APR) method.
The group departed in two speedboats at 11:00 WIT.
On their return, one of the boats capsized due to strong waves and high winds.
Five students survived, one was confirmed deceased, and another is still missing.
“We are continuing to coordinate all available resources in the search and rescue efforts for the missing student,” said Dr. Rustamadji.
UGM, through its Directorate of Community Service and the relevant faculty, is coordinating with the regent and local government officials of Southeast Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, as well as the Kagama Maluku chapter, to ensure a proper emergency response and provide assistance and support for affected students.
“UGM is conducting intensive coordination between the field supervisor, Kagama, and local partners to provide psychological and logistical support for the student team, and to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased’s body to his hometown with full university support,” he concluded.
