The Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM) has officially begun the construction of a new building to house its Language Laboratory and Language Center.
The groundbreaking ceremony was marked by the laying of the first stone by UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia, accompanied by Dean of FIB UGM Professor Setiadi, on Sunday (Aug. 10) in the front courtyard of FIB UGM.
Professor Setiadi explained that the construction of this building had been planned since 2015, alongside the Soegondo Building, which was built earlier in 2016 and now stands south of the new construction site. He noted that the new building will serve as a monumental milestone for the faculty.
“This building will be equipped with facilities that support the vision and mission of FIB in the future,” he said.
According to Professor Setiadi, the establishment of the Language Laboratory reflects the faculty’s readiness to embrace developments in cultural studies and the humanities in the digital era.
“FIB will be ready to enter the fields of digital humanities and visual communication design from a cultural perspective,” he remarked.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia commended the faculty for its proactive approach in responding to advances in knowledge. She expressed her hope that the new building and facilities would inspire the academic community to further excel in their fields while producing future experts in cultural studies. She also reminded the faculty to remain rooted in culture, in line with UGM’s identity as a cultural center.
“This building supports UGM’s role as a Cultural Center University. More than that, it represents a dream and aspiration to contribute to the greatness of both UGM and the nation,” she said.
The C Building of FIB UGM is designed to serve as the Language Laboratory and Language Center. Its rooms will be dedicated to language-related activities, student development units, a library, and various research centers.
The seventh floor will be developed into a co-working space to support a range of student activities. The building will be constructed in stages and is expected to be completed within one year.
