The Simfoni Team from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) has achieved a remarkable national accomplishment. The team, consisting of Anne Grace Pardosi, Keyra Audrey Annabelle Christian, and Orie Priscylla Mapeda Lumalan, all 2023 Accounting students, won first place in the Accounting Paper Competition (APC) held during Diponegoro Accounting’s Harmony (DASH) 2025.
The competition was organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business, Diponegoro University (FEB UNDIP) on Sept. 26 to 27, 2025, where the Simfoni Team emerged as the champion after outperforming dozens of teams from universities across Indonesia.
In this competition, participants were tasked with addressing a case study in Indonesia’s aviation industry. Although the sector plays a vital role in the national economy, it also contributes around 1% or 8.08 Mt of global carbon emissions, in addition to the noise pollution around airports that negatively impacts public health.
“Moreover, several airlines are also facing governance issues, such as fraud cases,” said Orie Priscylla Mapeda Lumalan at FEB UGM on Wednesday (Oct. 22).
Addressing these challenges, Lumalan explained that the Simfoni Team proposed the development of an AI-based ESG Predictive Analytics Hub, an integrated software platform connected to airline operational systems. The platform aims to minimize carbon emissions through route optimization and the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
“The developed platform can also be used to monitor noise levels, analyze public sentiment, and enhance transparency and regulatory compliance,” Lumalan elaborated.
Regarding their submitted paper, Lumalan stated that it was based on research conducted using a mixed-method approach, combining descriptive research and development (R&D) with a systematic literature review of various secondary data sources.
The analysis involved risk mapping, SWOT analysis, risk mitigation planning, and ESG performance assessment based on Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
“Our idea is expected to support the transition toward a green economy and strengthen sustainability practices in the national aviation sector. Honestly, we didn’t expect to win first place. The competitors were from top universities with outstanding research quality, and this experience has been a valuable motivation for us to continue growing,” she concluded.
